Hi Team,
Today, we witnessed something truly special.
A comedy magician came into our building — a complete stranger to our students — and held the attention of our entire middle school for nearly 50 minutes. Not a single behavior issue. Just joy, laughter, curiosity, and total engagement.
It wasn’t magic tricks alone that made the difference. It was how he engaged them. Let’s reflect on the simple, powerful tools he used — all of which are completely within our reach in the classroom every day:
-
Attention Getters: He didn’t fight for attention — he called for it. “Clap three times.” It worked because it was consistent and he wasn’t afraid to use it often. Today was a live, in-action reminder of just how well it can work. It can be any attention getter that works for you. Consistency is key though. Let’s recommit to using them intentionally and frequently.
-
Frequent Check-Ins: He didn’t assume he had them — he kept checking. Whether it was asking them to respond, follow a movement, or solve a problem, he kept inviting their focus back in. Over and over again. It's ok to change up the order of your lesson based on what's working and not working in the room.
-
Relevance: He tied in their world — TikTok, YouTube, things they love and understand. He made the content theirs. Using AI for ideas of relevance for your content is a great way to do this in the classroom.
-
Movement, Humor, and Joy: He had them pretending to cut limes and smell them. He made them laugh. He got a little silly. And in doing so, he earned their full attention.
-
Problem Solving and Praise: He made them think. He made them wonder. He gave praise both to individuals and to the group. He made them feel seen.
We often say relationships are the key — and they are. But today reminded me of something else, too: our students want to engage. They can behave beautifully. They are capable and curious and full of potential.
They showed us that today.
I know the year has been long. I know you're tired. I know behavior has been a challenge. But today gave us proof that just a spark of intentional engagement can completely transform the room.
So here’s my ask: find your “magic.” Add a new attention getter. Toss in a moment of silliness. Let them move. Speak their language. Spark curiosity. Praise generously. Re-engage your classroom like the magician did today.
Because the real magic? It wasn’t the tricks.
It was that our students — your students — were reminded that learning can feel like wonder.
You’ve got this.
